FULL DESCRIPTION
A very handsome and good quality rosewood writing desk made in c. 1850 and with many high quality details including a finely chased solid brass gallery, mahogany lined drawers with original brass escutcheons and locks (stamped secure lever and VR) with a working old key.

The drawers superbly made and with very finely dovetailed joints. The top with a deep rosewood crossbanded border with a profile edge and set with a chalk coloured thickly cut leather skiver in excellent condition with no wear, marks or damage. This is a perfectly fitted replacement skiver with a pretty embossed gold tooled border. Below each corner of the top are shallow turned finials and the legs are classically shaped with roundel mounts and dolphin spandrels. The cupped feet contain the original brass recessed casters - in strong and excellent working condition.

A particularly well made mahogany, rosewood and faux rosewood desk with deep rosewood crossbandings and veneers. In excellent original condition with no damage, repairs or woodworm. A small dark ink stain to the border of the top on the right hand side which has been there a century or more. The drawers open and close smoothly and are very well made with a feint impression of the original oiled paper linings to the drawer bases and some more old ink stains. The lovely tulip shaped stretcher has some old worm holes in the underside, treated and long since dead.

A very solid and well made desk, lovely colour and condition, practical and usable.
