FULL DESCRIPTION
A particularly high quality George III chest on chest. Solid mahogany, fully oak lined drawers with tiny hand cut dovetails. Original brass bale handles and escutcheons with lovely colour and smoothed from years of use. Original locks still present other than two drawers with well matched replacements.

Chest on chests were the ‘must have’ piece of furniture for wealthy Georgians and they were commissioned in great numbers from workshops in villages, towns and cities and vary hugely in style, size and quality.

This would have been an expensive bespoke made example, with lovely figuring to the mahogany and a well developed and rich colour, reeded and stop fluted canted corners to the upper case, oak drawer linings and substantial brass fittings throughout. Each of these ‘upgrades’ would have been at considerable extra cost. Although made 230 years ago, the chest is of such quality that it has survived generations of use in excellent condition and has clearly been loved and well cared for.

From a private home, the chest was original purchased from Hallidays Antiques in Oxford in the 1980s for £6,500 and is sold with the Halliday stock number.

All of the drawers open and close smoothly and the chest is of small, well balanced and useable proportions. The substantial bracket feet are original. Old shrinkage crack to side, not unpleasant and not going anywhere. Uppermost section of cornice appears 19th century as do backboards - old professional restoration. Minor dings and bruises consistent with age and careful use.

A really beautiful and original tallboy and a high quality piece of 18th Century furniture.
