A beautiful late 17th century oak chair. The most attractive shaped front legs with raised reeding and pointed toes back, offset bulb turned stretchers and deep shapely original apron to the front and sides of the seat, the tall waisted back with a serpentine shaped top. Solid and robust, peg jointed throughout, minor losses and restorations, a few old worm holes - long since dead - and small cracks and nibbles consistent with age and use. Sturdy and very comfortable with well padded seat and back.
A lovely early chair, heavy and robust and entirely practical for use. The fabric in very good order with no wear and possibly by the Gainsborough Silk weaving company is a beautiful pale emerald green with gold damask.
