FULL DESCRIPTION
A well cast and very heavy 19th century bronze of Cronos seated on the World and carrying a scythe. The figure has a beautiful rich brown patina and is in excellent original condition. The orb on which he sits and the scythe are both gilt bronze.

This is a lovely quality and most attractive bronze of a Greek god. Cronos is a figure which was rarely modelled and when found he is usually of much smaller proportions and less finely detailed as a decorative accompaniment for 19th century carriage clocks and pocket watches.

Cronos was worshipped widely in the Hellenic period and later by the Romans who identified him as their god Saturn. He was the son of two cosmic deities who ruled the Universe - his father Uranus (Heaven) and his mother Gaea (Earth). He was the youngest of twelve cosmic beings known as the Titans. Like all Greek Gods, he experienced many complexities, plots, deaths, loves and disasters.

His father, Uranus feared that his own children would overthrow him and imprisoned all of them but Gaea was so saddened by this that she released them and later plotted with Cronos to kill her husband. When Uranus was overthrown, Cronos separated Heaven from Earth and married the Earth goddess Rhea. Their children were Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, Poseidon and Zeus who later returned from Crete where he had been hidden, and over threw Cronos.

In early Greek carvings Cronos is depicted as an elderly man, carrying a scythe for harvesting and as an allegorical reference to time passing. He is usually seated on an orb to represent his kingship over the Earth as King of the Titans and Universe.

A dramatic and imposing bronze, very handsome with an excellent colour, and in an usually large size.
