16th Century

The top frieze decorated with fluidly carved cockatrice, S-scrolls, mythical beasts and a female figure all dating from the 16th century. The front rail of the seat similarly carved and both frieze and apron interspersed with carved coronets.

The linenfold carving also of exceptional quality and very expansive. Such an early, large and genuine panel is rarely found in this fine original condition and with such excellent colour and patination.

The settle is set on three cabriole legs to the front, each with carved designs at the hips, and with blocked feet to the rear. The new and very comfortable cushion pad is covered with Casamance Maynard old gold velvet - a high quality fabric retailing at 140 per metre.

The swept arms with channel carved top faces and set on turned supports.

The whole settle very heavy, peg jointed, solid and well made with no loose joints.

In our view the subframe of the settle is early 18th century and was made to house and incorporate the 16th century carved back panel, seat apron and early elements and that this has ensured their survival in such excellent original condition.

An extremely striking example, strongly recommended.
